Deborah Wagner, Executive Director

Deborah Wagner currently serves as the Executive Director for Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia. For the past 23 years, Deborah served as the Director of a Community Economic Development Program for a non-profit community action agency. She was responsible for the Financial Services, Business Services, Program Administration and Compliance, Data Collection and Goal Outcomes. She worked with funding partners in all aspects of the non-profit industry and has represented programs locally as well as at the State and National level. Deborah attended Virginia Highlands Community College and King College. She has received intensive Training Certifications from the Community Development Financing Institute, NeighborWorks Training Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. She also serves as a member of the Bristol Virginia Industrial Development Authority and is a member of the Bristol Public Library Foundation.
Deborah has worked for families who are at-risk and low income for 35 years. She believes a difference can be made by bringing the support of caring adults and being embraced by the community to those families in need. She changed the path and direction of her career to “make a difference by helping kids stay in school and achieve in life…with whatever it takes”!
Alex Littleton, Regional Program Director
Alex Littleton currently serves as regional program director. Alex lives in Bristol, VA, where she was born and raised, with her husband and two young children. She began work with Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia in July 2014 after earning her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Tennessee and master’s degree in Education from King University. Alex worked as a site coordintor with Communities In Schools of SWVA prior to becoming regional program direcotr. She is also heavily involved in an outreach ministry at her church which led to her passion for working with at-risk youth and their families.
Alex found her time as a site soordinator with Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia both very challenging and very rewarding. Poverty and instability impacts every aspect of a student’s life. In this region, so many of our students are in need of support to help change the course of their futures. Communities In Schools gives Alex the ability to support these children and students in a way that other programs cannot. She looks forward to furthering her work with Communities In Schools as regional program director.
Carrie Goss, Site Coordinator
Virginia Middle School
Carrie Goss currently serves as site coordinator at Virginia Middle School. Mrs. Goss lives in Bristol, Virginia with her husband and three boys. Her daughter is currently living in Johnson City, TN and attending ETSU. Prior to joining Communities In Schools of SWVA, Mrs. Goss operated a small business. Her past experience also includes working as a case manager at a halfway house and serving as a placement director at a business, training school where she helped women prepare for the job market.
Mrs. Goss has enjoyed her time with Communities In Schools and looks forward to her continued contributions in implementing the CIS model at Virginia Middle School. She considers the opportunity to help out students and their families in need extremely rewarding, while also very challenging. A quote that she thinks of often when reflecting on her role as a site coordinator for CIS is, “Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” – Carl Bard
